LOFT CONVERSION

Camden, London – Loft conversion and roof extension in a Grade II-listed home, balancing conservation area constraints with contemporary space needs.

brief.

Be Studio was appointed to design a loft conversion for a Grade II-listed home in the St. John’s Wood Conservation Area. The initial mansard proposal was refused due to heritage impact. Working closely with the planning department and the client, we revised the scheme to meet both regulatory and lifestyle requirements—achieving a subtle yet functional roof extension.

details.

The original design aimed to introduce a rear-facing mansard with skylights to maximize space and light. However, planning authorities raised concerns over its visibility and impact on neighboring historic properties. Instead of compromising the vision, Be Studio collaborated with the client and local officers to develop a revised plan—introducing a restrained roof extension that maintained the architectural integrity of the conservation area. The new scheme delivered the desired loft space and enhanced natural light while respecting the home's listed status. By reconfiguring internal volumes and integrating the new structure seamlessly with the existing roofline, we ensured both functional success and aesthetic continuity. This project demonstrates our ability to transform challenging heritage contexts into refined, modern living spaces through creativity, compliance, and careful negotiation.
