Be Studio is redesigning a characterful 3-bedroom penthouse in Tanners Yard, Bermondsey SE1. The client was briefed to enhance light, flow, and energy performance. Our scope includes exploring three layout concepts—reversing living and sleeping zones, expanding dormer windows, or combining both. The architectural language blends 19th-century charm with contemporary livability, supporting a low-energy, high-comfort lifestyle.

Set within an 1880s converted tannery in Bermondsey’s conservation area, this penthouse renovation balances heritage with innovation. The current layout lacks cohesion, prompting a feasibility study to test bold reconfigurations: relocating living spaces to the lower level for better access and views; enhancing daylight through enlarged dormers; or a hybrid layout uniting both ideas. Beyond spatial planning, we’re integrating sustainable upgrades—underfloor heating, acoustic insulation, double-glazed Crittall windows, MHRV, and rooftop solar panels—to improve performance and comfort. As we progress toward concept design, visual storytelling through materials and 3D modelling will help shape a refined, modern home rooted in its historical context.
